Sunrise’s longtime entertainment reporter Nelson Aspen has announced he’s quitting the show, after almost 20 years on air.
The 58-year-old shared the shock news on Sunrise on Friday, when he appeared on the Channel Seven show via a live cross.
‘After 19 and a half years with Sunrise, I am giving you my two week notice,’ Nelson began to a surprised Natalie Barr and fill-in host Michael Usher.

Nelson said he’s quitting the show to focus on the release of his new book, Your Home Is Your Castle.
‘I am going to go and finish up my new book… and I’ll be doing a book tour, a Q&A show… that will include Australian cities. And then we’ll look back with a farewell on the 15th.’
Host Natalie Barr seemed upset but told Nelson, ‘It’s not goodbye’.

‘Nelson, it’s been a wonderful ride, we are going to miss you but it’s not goodbye as we have two weeks to say that.’
He finished: ‘It’s just so long’.
The veteran American journalist has been appearing on Sunrise for almost 20 years.
He has worked with hosts including Melissa Doyle, Samantha Armytage and Natalie Barr.

Back in 2018, to celebrate 15 years of Nelson on the show, Nelson reflected on his time on Sunrise as throwback footage played.
He said he was grateful for ‘having the opportunity to interview so many stars’.
‘Just having the experience of being a part of the Sunrise family and coming to Australia and meeting you guys and the fans… these are opportunities that are extraordinary,’ Nelson added.
He was recently presented with the International Media Journalist of the Year by the Publicists Guild of America in 2020, by none other than Jennifer Aniston.
Throughout his career, Nelson has interviewed the likes of Julie Andrews, Harrison Ford, Rose Byrne, and helped cover events including the Oscars for Sunrise.
