How a simple selfie launched Neighbours actor Matty Wilson to stardom

Former Neighbours’ star Matty Wilson has revealed how one selfie launched his career.

The actor, 34, was working as a tradie when his friend mentioned there was a competition for an underwear ad – which eventually lead to his successful career as a soap star and model.

After his mother took photos of him and submitted them, he quickly ended up as a model for the AussieBum Underwear brand.

‘The next day we got a call up saying, “Are you free next Monday?”, so we went into the AussieBum headquarters and seven days after that we opened up the Sunday newspaper, where there was a full spread of me,’ he told Nine Honey.

After getting success as a model, in 2015 he joined Aussie soap Neighbours as Aaron Brennan, making history when he wed David Tanaka, played by actor Takaya Honda, in the first same-sex marriage on Australian TV.

‘That was the most iconic moment of my career,’ he added.

‘It was an incredibly important story for our characters and it was amplified even more when the Australian government allowed same-sex marriages to happened.

‘I think it happened the day before or the day after the episode went to air. That was purely a coincidence.’

It comes after the former Neighbours star has made a surprising admission about working on soaps.

in an interview with Yahoo  last week he said: ‘I’ll probably get shot for saying this, but I’m not a big fan of soap operas.’

‘It’s just too much drama, I think,’ he added with a laugh.

‘In one given day you’re crying, you’re screaming, you’ve got so much going on. It’s so dramatic!’
