Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans has won the People’s Choice prize at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The coming-of-age ode to cinema was announced as the winner during a TIFF awards breakfast on Sunday morning, capping 10 days of in-person film-going and festivities.

The Fabelmans is the first Spielberg film to screen at TIFF and is billed as the legendary director’s most personal project to date.

Michelle Williams and Paul Dano star as the parents of aspiring teenage filmmaker Sammy Fabelman growing up in mid-century Arizona.

The 75-year-old director, and his frequent collaborator Tony Kushner, tell reporters about Spielberg’s TIFF debut, a coming-of-age story about his upbringing in postwar Arizona.

Last year’s winner was the Northern Ireland-set family drama Belfast.

The People’s Choice prize is chosen through online votes and is often seen as a predictor of Academy Award success. In each of the last 10 years, the TIFF winner has gone on to be nominated for best picture at the Oscars and has often won it.

Toronto’s audience award was announced as the largest North American film festival wrapped up its 47th edition and first full-scale gathering in three years.
