A large fire at a BAE Systems shipbuilding site in north-west England broke out early on Wednesday, police said.

According to Cumbria police, the “significant fire” was first reported at 12.44am at the BAE Systems site in the port of Barrow-in-Furness.

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said crews were attending and advised residents to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area.

Photos on social media showed flames and smoke above Devonshire Dock Hall, an indoor shipbuilding complex where Royal Navy nuclear submarines are constructed, including the latest Dreadnought-class vessels.

Police said there was “no nuclear risk”.
