The Canadians, the defending Olympic champions, pulled out a 2-1 win over New Zealand in Thursday’s tournament opener.
Canada will be hard-pressed to advance to the knockout stage as they were handed a six-point deduction by FIFA on Saturday. The punishment was levied after two Canadian staff members were caught using drones to spy on New Zealand’s practices before the teams played their opening game.
The Canadian team will also be without their head coach, Bev Priestman, after she was suspended for the remainder of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by Canada Soccer after Thursday’s match due to the drone incident.
