Ivan Hernández, 24, who is linked to massacre of American Mormon family of nine in Mexico, is arrested by U.S. Marshalls in New Mexico after illegally crossing border

A man who is linked to the 2019 massacre of nine American citizens in northern Mexico has been arrested in New Mexico.

Ivan Hernández, 24, was apprehended in New Mexico for unlawfully crossing the United States-Mexico border, the U.S. Marshals said in a statement.

The U.S. Marshals received a report regarding Hernández’s whereabouts and then alerted Homeland Security Investigation (HSI), which took him into custody.

‘This arrest represents our relentless and unwavering dedication, along with our partners, in tracking down and apprehending violent foreign fugitives,’ said Sonya K. Chavez, US Marshal for the District of New Mexico. ‘Don’t come to the State of New Mexico and attempt to hide, we will find you and ensure justice is served.’

DailyMail.com reached out to the U.S. Marshals for comments.

It’s unknown for how long Hernández was in the United States before he was arrested.

Hernández is awaiting a court date for his illegal border entry charge at a federal court in Albuquerque. His extradition to Mexico is also pending.

Hernández is wanted by Mexican authorities for his role in the roadside ambush in Sonora, Mexico on November 4, 2019.

Adrián LeBarón, whose daughter Rhonita Miller, 30, and four grandchildren were murdered, lamented that a person as young as Hernández would have gotten involved with illegal activities.

‘They arrested another person involved in the massacre of my family, it is Iván Gustavo Hdz, ‘El Paquiao,’ it was on Monday in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the US,’ LeBarón wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as twitter. ‘He is 24 years old, ahead of him he had hundreds of options, but something is so broken in our country that young people become cannon fodder.’

The attack led to the deaths of nine American Mormons – Dawna Ray, 43, and her two sons, Trevor, 11, and Rogan, 3; Miller, 30, and her children, eight-month-old twins Tiana and Titus, Howard Jr., 12, and Krystal, 10; and Christina Langford, 29.

Hernández and other cartel gunmen intercepted a fleet of three SUVs in the Sonora town of Bavispe, opening fired and torching the vehicles.

Langford is said to have gotten out of her vehicle to confront the cartel henchmen and was shot dead. Her seven-month-old Faith survived.

Dawna Ray and two of her nine children were shot dead when her vehicle was stopped near Langford’s Johnson’s vehicle.

Miller and her children were intercepted about 10 miles down the road. They were shot dead and then had their vehicle set on fire while they were still inside.

Ray’s seven surviving children, including five who were shot, and Langford’s daughter managed to escape and were rescued.

The horrifying attack prompted then-President Donald Trump to offer military support to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in an effort to track down the killers.
