Two Irish tourists, aged 59 and 60, are run over and killed in Rome: Victims were ‘thrown several yards by the impact’

Two Irish tourists, aged 59 and 60, have been run over and killed in a horrific car crash in Rome. 

The two victims were walking across a pedestrian crossing in the southern outskirts of the Italian capital when they were hit by a car and reportedly thrown several yards by the impact this afternoon, reports Italian newspaper La Stampa. 

The horrified driver, 54, of the Ford Fiesta reportedly got out of the car and provided first aid to the Irish victims but was unable to save them. 

The driver, who has not been named, was also injured in the crash and was transported to the nearby Sant’Eugenio hospital. 

The fatal crash occurred near the presidential estate of Castel Porziano, near a campsite, at 12.50pm today.

Police are now investigating the case and will ascertain whether the motorist ran a red light when he hit the two Irish tourists.
