Number plate banned in NSW for being too offensive – but no one can figure out what’s so rude about it

A car lover who donned his dream ride with personalised number plates has been ordered to take them off after they were deemed too ‘offensive’.

Larrikin Daniel was forced to wait 15 months for his Hyundai i30 N to arrive from the dealership, so as joke he purchased the registration plates that reads ‘W8N4U’ – meaning ‘waiting for you’.

While the plates were approved by Transport NSW just four months ago, Daniel received a letter telling him he needs to hand them back in or have his registration cancelled.

Transport NSW told the retail worker the reason is because the plates were deemed to be ‘offensive’.

Daniel has been left confused and frustrated as to why his innocuous plates were in anyway explicit.

‘At first (I) laughed about it, then (I) kind of died a little on the inside,’ Daniel told A Current Affair.

‘It’s more than just a plate to me … it makes no sense.’

‘I mean there’s way worse plates out there but somehow my plates got flagged for being inappropriate.’

Transport NSW has since apologised to Daniel for allowing the plates to be issued, blaming it on an issue on a system error.

‘A system error failed to identify that plates with this alphanumeric combination had been allocated before this order was placed and as a result, the letter sent to the customer did not correctly explain why the plates were recalled,’ a spokesperson for Transport NSW said.

‘The customer is returning the plates and will be given a full refund for all fees paid, and Transport for NSW has offered to waive the order fee for a new set of plates.’
