Brits shocked after new mother reveals the total cost of giving birth in US without insurance

Britons have been left baffled after a woman revealed the total cost of having a baby in America without insurance.

In a video posted to TikTok, Sarai Jones, from the US, broke down the price it cost her to give birth and viewers could not believe the total amount.

With all of the separate charges added together, the new mother was billed a whopping $47,292.01 (£37,518.17).

However, thanks to her insurance covering most of it, she only had to pay $2,205.09 (£1,749.36).

However many of her followers were left stunned by the bill – with Brits, Australians and Canadians confessing they only had to pay for parking.

Sarai had just received her bill and decided to record her reaction and break it down, sharing how much it all cost with her followers on TikTok.

Holding her adorable new baby, she explained that she vaginally delivered him and she was induced, adding ‘Yes, I got the epidural, amazing.’

Looking at her computer screen she exclaimed ‘Oh my gosh, first thing is the labour room / delivery room, $13,900 (£11,027.29). Ouch.

‘I got another bill that says ‘room and board’ so my private, that was $19,111 (£15,161.33). Next charge is anesthesia, $2,181 (£1730.25)’

She continued to list the mounting costs: ‘Pharmacy, $1,291.33 (£1024.45), other diagnostic services, that was $1001 (£794.12).’

Puzzled, she added: ‘What is that? Please explain?’

Sarai continued: ‘The laboratory was $862 (£683.85) and then I got a charge for the emergency room which was $411 (£326.06).’

All of those together added up to $38,757.33 (£30,747.35), which she said ‘hurt more than the contractions.’

Luckily, the American was covered by insurance which covered a lot of it, concluding that the amount due was ‘only’ $1,418.26 (£1,125.15).’

Looking at her computer screen again, she added ‘I’m not done I have like three more charges.

‘Next bill is from US anesthesia and they charged me $1,356.68 (£1076.29) but after insurance that was only $135.67 (£107.63).

With all of the separate charges added together, the new mum was billed a whopping $47, 292.01 (£37,518.17)

‘My last two charges are vaginal delivery and post-partum care and that was $6,793 (£5,389.09).

‘The last final charge was the cervical dilator which is the balloon that they put up there to induce my labour. That was $385 (£305.43).

‘Okay wanna know the final amount total? In total, it cost $47, 292.01 (£37518.17) to have a baby.’

Despite her total bill being over $40,000 (Over £31,000), all that was left to fork out after insurance was $2,205.09 (£1,749.36), which the TikToker was pleased about.

However, to people in other parts of the world, this is still a shocking figure.

One Finnish viewer wrote: ‘In Finland you only pay parking and then you get a government issued baby box full of clothes and toys for the baby.’

Meanwhile, Brits added: ‘I love you NHS’ and ‘Live laugh love UK healthcare’.

A mother from down under said: ‘In Australia it’s free, and most hospitals doesn’t even charge for parking….’

Even some other Americans were shocked by the bill and advised the new mum to ask for an itemized bill as it could remove more items that aren’t needed.
