Villawood Detention Centre on fire in Sydney’s west, forcing inmates to jump from complex

A blaze has broken out at one of Australia’s biggest detention centres, forcing inmates to jump from the facility in fear of their lives.

Emergency crews were called to Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney‘s west on Thursday morning following reports of smoke billowing from the facility.

Inmates could be seen jumping to safety from a second-floor balcony, according to local residents. 

The fire has since been extinguished.

Paramedics remain on scene treating firefighters and inmates for smoke inhalation
