Police officer killed as hostage situation in Mississippi home turns into a fatal shooting

One police officer has died and another is in hospital with ‘significant injuries’ after a hostage situation turned into a fatal standoff in Mississippi.

Police from both Madison and Brandon Police Departments were called to the scene on Terrapin Hill Road where a domestic dispute between a man and a woman was unfolding.

The man barricaded himself in the home and took the woman as hostage when police arrived at the scene.

After hours of negotiations, he surrendered the woman but stayed inside himself.

Over a dozen gunshots were heard ringing out at 6am.

The first officer was shot, and the second was hit during another gunfire exchange at 9.30am. 

According to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the suspect was also killed. 

The officer who has since died was from Madison, and the injured cop is from Brandon. 

Bailey Martin from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said: ‘While attempting to enter the residence where the subject was barricaded, an officer from Madison Police Department received fatal injuries.

‘When they arrived on-scene, the subject fired shots at officers.’
