What Happened At The Bail Hearing?

Nathan faced multiple charges, including mid-range drink driving, negligent driving occasioning death, driving in a dangerous manner, and dangerous driving occasioning death.

However, Nathan’s plans took a turn for the worse. The police prosecutor, Ray Kingston, argued against granting bail, stating that Nathan had “no need” to drive under the influence considering he lived only 1.4 kilometers away from the accident location.

Moreover, this was not Nathan’s first conviction. In 2017, he had previously been charged with high-range drink driving. Additionally, he had served two rigorous correction orders for drug-related offenses.

In Nathan’s defense, his lawyer Brett Ford emphasized that his client had never been in custody before. Brett further mentioned that Nathan worked as a boilermaker and had been a resident of the area for a few years, living with his two sons.

Brett also raised the point that the deceased individuals were in an unexpected position, implying that their actions may have contributed to the accident.

The outcome was a rollercoaster of emotions for Nathan. Perhaps he had anticipated being remanded in custody. However, Magistrate Geraldine Beattie held a different perspective.

Ms. Beattie believed that the community’s concerns could be alleviated and decided to grant Nathan bail. Upon hearing the decision, Nathan broke down in tears. His brother and partner were present in court to support him.

As part of his bail conditions, Nathan is prohibited from driving and is required to appear in court again in August.
