Firebrand Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on Saturday blasted calls for an assault weapons ban in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs.
She also labeled the shooter ‘a transgender‘ after defense attorneys said the suspect uses ‘they/them’ pronouns – which could possibly complicate prosecutors’ push for hate crimes charges.
The Georgia Republican capped off the Twitter post with a photo of herself grinning while crouched over a dead wild hog and armed with an assault-style rifle.
Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, is accused of killing five people and wounding more than a dozen others after opening fire at Club Q on the night of November 19.
Human rights activists and the LGBTQ community have decried the shooting as motivated by anti-gay hate, and have blamed voices on the right for fomenting it via today’s heated culture war about the rights of transgender youth.
Democrats led by President Joe Biden have renewed calls for an assault weapons ban in the shooting’s fallout. Aldrich used an assault-style weapon and a handgun to carry out his attack, authorities have said.
But Greene came out swinging on Saturday, calling the AR-15 – a popular semi-automatic rifle – her ‘favorite’ firearm despite its being blamed for hundreds of US mass shooting deaths.
The outspoken conservative lawmaker drove her point home with a photo of herself, armed with what appears to be an AR-15, standing over a dead hog.

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene responded to gun control calls in the shooting’s wake with a photo of herself, armed, crouched over a dead hog
‘The AR-15 is my favorite gun for hunting & home defense,’ Greene wrote on Twitter.
‘Banning “assault weapons” will not stop a transgender from shooting up his own LGBTQ community or any other murderer already breaking laws to kill people.’
She claimed that ‘more gun control laws just create more defenseless victims.’
Greene also lashed out at Biden directly, calling him a ‘career politician in office longer than I’ve been alive and he knows NOTHING about guns.’

‘Joe is an elite politician who enjoys the protection of AR-15’s but wants to take your guns away and leave you defenseless at the mercy of criminals who don’t care about laws,’ the congresswoman said.
‘I will always protect American’s GREAT Second Amendment! No Assault Weapons Ban!!’
The photo appears to be a still from Greene’s earlier campaign for a chance to win a hog hunting trip with her.
Aldrich, the Colorado Springs shooter, is currently being held on murder and bias-motivated crime charges.
Previously known as Nicholas Brink, Aldrich is the grandchild of a Republican California Assemblyman named Rep. Randy Voepel – who has espoused fringe-right beliefs like support for the January 6 Capitol riot.
The shooter’s birth father was recorded by CBS 8 San Diego reacting to the news of the mass killing, appearing to be more concerned that his child was potentially LGBTQ than their being accused of murder.
‘I go on to find out it’s a gay bar. I got scared, “Shit, is he gay?” And he’s not gay, so I said, phew,’ Aaron Brink told the local station. ‘I am a conservative Republican.’
Biden told reporters in Nantucket, where he spent Thanksgiving, that he would renew attempts to pass an assault weapons ban after the Colorado Springs shooting and another deadly mass slaughter in Virginia this month.
‘The idea we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick. Just sick,’ the president said during the holiday.
He pledged: ‘I’m going to try to get rid of assault weapons.’
