X, formerly Twitter, is expanding Community Notes – its user-submitted fact-checking feature – to videos. This means that, along with photos, the ‘fact-checkers’ will now be able to provide context and/ or flag misleading as well as AI-generated videos on the microblogging platform.
“Not just for images anymore — introducing notes on videos!,” Community Notes handle on X posted. It explained that the notes written on certain videos will automatically show on other posts containing matching videos.
It was just last week when the Elon Musk-owned company expanded the ability to show Community Notes on multiple posts containing matching images.
“A highly-scalable way of adding context to edited clips, AI-generated videos, and more,” it added. The ability to write notes on videos is available to all Top Writers – a section of scribblers who are “the most impactful note writers.”
Top Writers can select the option “About the video in this post, and should appear on all posts including this video” to add notes about a clip. But that doesn’t end here. The notes are then rated for accuracy by other writers/ moderators.
As per X, once a Community Note is rated as helpful by an acceptable number of users, it is shown directly on the post. However, in case the note is rated to be ‘not unhelpful’, the submission will disappear.
How will it help users?
Just like text and photos, the feature is aimed at helping the users distinguish between misleading and fake information on the platform. Earlier this year, a hoax image of an attack on the Pentagon triggered turmoil globally.
Additionally, the availability of AI tools to generate images also resulted in the influx of fake images, such as former US President Donald Trump being arrested and Pope Francis in a puffer jacket, fooling the internet.
A Community Note could help people not share an edited or fake image, essentially helping in curbing the spread of misinformation.
