Google recently removed the app permissions section from Play Store and then brought it back a couple of weeks later after facing some serious criticism from users. Now, it seems that the company has removed another important information from the Play Store’s app listing page.
9to5Google has reported that the Play Store now no longer shows the app version under the App info section. Generally, users can find out the current version of the app by tapping the ‘About this app’ option under the listing page and scrolling down to ‘App info’ section.
The report claims that the ‘Version’ tag is no longer there. Furthermore, the missing Version tag is only applicable for the mobile app only. It is also worth mentioning that version details for WearOS apps and Android/Google TV apps are still visible. Also, Play Store web still shows the version of the app.
We also tried to verify this change. Unfortunately, our Android smartphone still has the ‘Version’ tag there. The website has mentioned that it can be some kind of an issue and not a permanent change.
But, we are still unable to think of a legitimate reason behind this change or even the benefit Google may get as a part of omitting version information from the app’s listing page. We think that this can also be some kind of mistake.
However, if this is an intentional change, then it will affect users a lot. It is important for users to know which version of the app they are installing on their devices, especially in case of buggy release. This will also let them know if they are running the latest version of the app or not.
