Google has announced that its Google Play Movies & TV app on Android TV is going away from Android TV. In an email to Android TV users, the tech giant has confirmed that the Play Movies & TV app will not be available on the platform from October 5.
As reported by 9to5Google, the Google Play Movies & TV is said to be replaced by the Shop tab. The report adds that the Shop tab is designed to serve as the alternative for purchasing and renting movies, as well as for locating previously made purchases, including ongoing rentals. In addition to accessing content through the Library section, you can also watch within the YouTube app and the Google TV apps available on various platforms.
Earlier this year, Google killed its 10-year-old service, the Google Now Launcher. Google Now, initially known as the Google Experience Launcher (GEL), was introduced in 2012 as a straightforward launcher. It expanded its reach in 2014 when it became widely available as the Google Now Launcher for all Android 4.1+ devices through the Google Play Store. This launcher provided convenient access to Google Now cards and featured a clean and user-friendly interface.
However, in 2017, Google informed its partners that it would gradually phase out the primary feature of Google Now access from the Google Now Launcher (GNL). This change occurred because Google had already made this capability accessible to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) launchers. Instead, Google began using the Pixel Launcher for its own phones. While the GNL continued to receive some updates through the Google app, it was no longer a top priority for the company, as the Google Assistant had gained prominence.
