Microsoft testing new features in Notepad, Snipping Tool on Windows 11: What are they, how will they help users

Microsoft is testing new features in Snipping Tool and Notepad apps. These features are currently available to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels on Windows 11.

What’s new in Notepad
Microsoft said that Notepad will automatically start saving their session state which will allow users to close Notepad without any interrupting dialogue saying, “Do you want to save changes to *file name*”. The update will also allow users to pick up where they left off when they return.

“Notepad will automatically restore previously open tabs as well as unsaved content and edits across those open tabs. Saved session state does not impact any of your files, though, and it is still your choice whether to save or discard unsaved changes to files anytime you close a tab,” the company said.

Users can turn this feature off in app settings in case users prefer to have a fresh start every time they open Notepad.

The feature is helpful in situations when users accidentally close the app while working. With the feature enabled, the data will not be lost and users can continue working on the writeup.

Snipping Tool update
The update in the Snipping Tool introduces the combined capture bar that will make it easier to switch between capturing screenshots and screen recordings without having to open the app.

Users can use the Print Screen or Win + Shift + S keyboard shortcuts to open the capture bar for snipping, where they will continue to find the familiar snipping modes or try the new Win + Shift + R keyboard shortcut to open the capture bar for recording.

“We are also improving the screen recording experience based on your feedback by introducing support for optionally recording your PC audio and voiceovers using a microphone,” Microsoft said.

New app settings will let users configure the default audio recording settings for new screen recordings. In case users have multiple recording devices, they can select their preferred recording device before starting to record.

Microsoft also said that in case users face an issue where they might unexpectedly see a pop-up dialog when taking a screenshot asking them to “Select an app to open this ‘ms-screenclip’ link”. Select “Snipping Tool” in case users encounter this dialog.
