WhatsApp is getting recent history sharing feature for groups, what it means for you

Another day, another WhatsApp feature. WhatsApp has yet another new feature that will make the instant messaging platform experience better for users. The feature is aimed at groups and it is termed as “recent history sharing”.

WhatsApp is testing groups recent history sharing
WABetaInfo has reported that WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.18.5 has a new feature — recent history sharing option. The feature, when enabled, will automatically share messages sent in groups in the last 24 hours for new joinees.

Dedicated induction screen
The report also mentions that a recent beta update with version 2.23.18.17 on Android also includes a new induction screen for users to choose whether they want to enable the recent history sharing feature for the group or not.

How this feature works
According to the report, if the feature is enabled, all the messages sent by existing members of the group will automatically be shared wiith new members who have just joined the group. This will give the new joinees a better sense of undersanding about what is going on or the topic people are usually talking about. This will improve the overall group experience of groups on WhatsApp. But, the option needs to be enabled by group admin.

Also, it has clearly mentioned that all the messages including recent history sharing is protected by end-to-end encryption and the feature does not compromise on that part.

Do note that the feature is still in the development phase and is currently available for select beta testers across the globe. Also, the feature is likely to make its way to the stable release in future. It is also possible that it may never make the cut to the stable release.
