Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett is set to raid yet another of his former clubs with the veteran coach chasing Jaydn Su’A from the Dragons.

Su’A has two years left on his deal with the Dragons but isn’t happy at the club and will ask for a release to return to his family in Queensland on compassionate grounds.

Bennett and Su’A are close – the rampaging forward played under Bennett at both the Broncos and Rabbitohs.

The Dolphins are desperate for more strike power in their pack for their inaugural season in 2023 and Su’A would be a perfect fit.

But the Dragons don’t want to release Su’A, one of the few players in their under-performing pack to show any fire this season.

Stand by for developments.

SHEENS RECRUITS OLD FRIEND

Former Raiders coach David Furner has signed on to join Tim Sheens’ staff at the Tigers for next season.

Furner is regarded among the best assistant coaches in the game, having worked at the Knights and Bulldogs over the past two seasons.

Sheens and Furner are extremely close – the veteran coach brought Furner into first grade as a player in the early 1990s and then had him as an assistant when he coached the Kangaroos a decade ago.

Furner, whose father Don was the inaugural Raiders coach in 1982, also coached Canberra from 2009 to 2013.

DRAGONS EYE RIVAL NO.9s

With Andrew McCullough likely to retire, another hooker has come up on the Dragons’ radar.

Unwanted Bronco Jake Turpin is in St George Illawarra’s sights for the key hooking spot.

The club has already been linked with the Cowboys’ Reece Robson, Rooster Sam Verrills and Wests Tigers’ Jacob Liddle.

The Cowboys are likely to retain Robson, a former Dragon who is having a fine season.

Verrills is set to join the Titans next year but Liddle is likely to move on from the Tigers following the club’s signing of Panthers star Api Koroisau.

That leaves the Dragons with the choice between Turpin or Liddle – and they may even take on both.

SCHOOLBOY STAR TO TAKE DOLPHINS BY STORM

Write down the name of new Dolphins signing Tory Bath in your little black books.

A speedy fullback from well known football nursery Nudgee College in Queensland, Bath was recently voted in the top 30 rugby union players at schoolboy level in the world.

A versatile player who can also fill in at five-eighth, Bath has signed a train and trial contract for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The 18-year-old probably won’t play in the top grade next season, but by 2024, the Dolphins are certain to give the boom outside back a chance in the big league.
