Phil Gould has floated a potential reason for Api Koroisau being left out of the NSW Blues team for the State of Origin opener.
In one of the more surprising selection calls from new coach Michael Maguire, the star hooker was snubbed in favour of Reece Robson.
Koroisau is widely regarded as one of the best dummy-halves in the NRL, with his crafty work around the ruck tailor-made for the Origin arena.

But according to Gould on Nine’s 100% Footy, the 31-year-old’s recent minor injury setback could have swayed Maguire to go with the younger Robson in a close call.
“I think the night that Api left the field with a back complaint and was still in doubt the following week, that sort of resonates in an Origin coach’s mind,” he said.
“How do I replace that? How do I cover for that? If he’s at the stage in his career where that’s gonna be a problem to him, it could come against him.
“It could only be one per cent of the whole issue, but it’s enough for the coach to think I need a younger, sturdier version in that area.”

Koroisau has been a clear standout in a struggling Wests Tigers outfit this season, while Robson has been solid for the Cowboys, who are coming off two straight wins.
Given the type of squad Maguire has selected – which is filled with toilers and workhorses – Robson’s defensive capabilities seemingly gave him the edge.

“Both great players, obviously there is two sides to the game and I’ve looked closely at both,” Maguire said on 100% Footy.
“Reece is strong on both sides of the ball and that’s why I’ve gone with him.”
Robson played in two games last year for the Blues, including an 80-minute performance in game two, and will get another chance to impress against the Maroons.
The series will kick off on June 5 at Accor Stadium.
