Weeks after being cleared to represent Australia in Paris, three-time Olympic medallist and equestrian great Shane Rose has been hospitalised after a serious fall.
Rose was rushed to ICU after the fall resulted in a “heavy concussion”, broken femur, fractured pelvis and fractured ribs while presenting at a cross country schooling session.
“As the saying goes Peacock, one day Feather Duster the next! After a fantastic week in New Zealand Shane and Virgil secured their Olympic qualifications, this week Shane was brought back down to earth literally,” Shane Rose Eventing said on Instagram on Friday.

“Shane had surgery this morning to stabilize the femur and pelvis.”
His team hopes he will be able to recover and continue preparations for Paris 2024.
“Shane is in good hands with a great medical team and support network,” the statement continued.
“While the timing is unfortunate we are hopeful there is adequate time for him to recover and still be able to continue his preparation schedule for the Paris Olympics Games.
“We are so thankful to the fantastic team at Bimbadeen Park who have stepped up in Shane’s absence to ensure it was business as usual at Bimbadeen Park. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
The 50-year-old was under investigation by the sport’s governing body after a complaint was made about what he wore during a fancy dress event last month.
Rose rode out on a horse while wearing only an orange mankini – the skimpy men’s outfit made famous by Sacha Baron Cohen’s fictional character Borat – at the Wallaby Hill Extravaganza in the NSW Southern Highlands.
