Australian openers and Test hopefuls Cameron Bancroft (53) and Marcus Harris (49) made starts but failed to go on with it.
Matthew Renshaw – who is considered in a three-way battle with Bancroft and Harris – resumes on day three on 18, alongside Cameron Green on 19.
Green is locked in a race with Mitchell Marsh for the all-rounder spot in the Test team for the first match in Perth from Thursday.
