Europa League & Europa Conference League state of play: Liverpool, West Ham, Brighton, Rangers, Aston Villa & Aberdeen latest | Football News

The state of play, tables, results and schedule after matchday five in the Europa League and Europa Conference League…

In the Champions League, winning the group is regarded as important to secure a home match in the second leg of the round of 16. In the Europa League, finishing in first place ensures a team skips a round of games.

The eight group winners earn a direct place in the last 16 of the competition, whereas finishing in second place only gets a team a playoff match against the clubs who drop into the Europa League as third-place finishers in Champions League groups.

This season, that could include Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United or Newcastle.

Group A

West Ham’s place in the top two is confirmed after Tomas Soucek’s late winner away to Backa Topola, and they will secure top spot if they avoid defeat at home to Freiburg on matchday six.

The German side have also locked up a place in the top two after thrashing Olympiakos 5-0, with Michael Gregoritsch scoring a hat-trick.

Olympiakos will advance to the Europa Conference League play-off if they win or draw at home to Backa Topola in their final group match.

Group B

Brighton’s place in the top two is secure thanks to Joao Pedro’s penalty away to AEK Athens but they must beat Marseille at home on matchday six to finish top of the group.

If the Seagulls draw or lose, Marseille – who have also already confirmed a top-two place – will finish first after they beat Ajax 4-3, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring in the 93rd minute to complete his hat-trick.

AEK will go into the Europa Conference League play-off if they do not lose away to Ajax in their final game.

Group C

Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw with Aris Limassol but will finish top of the group if they win away to Real Betis – who lost 1-0 to Sparta Prague – on matchday six.

A draw will also be enough for Rangers to reach the play-offs if Sparta do not beat Aris in their final match.

Group D

Atalanta secured first place by holding Sporting to a 1-1 draw, while the Portuguese side are guaranteed to finish second.

Rakow won 1-0 away to Sturm Graz, meaning the sides are level on four points and can both still qualify for the Europa Conference League play-off.

Group E

Liverpool secured first place with a 4-0 thrashing of LASK but Toulouse missed the chance to wrap up second spot after being held to a 1-1 draw by Union Saint-Gilloise.

However, Toulouse will finish second if they avoid defeat away to LASK on matchday six, while the Austrian side must win to have any chance of beating Union to third place.

Group F

Rennes secured a place in the top two with a 3-0 win against Maccabi Haifa, who cannot reach the next round.

Villarreal are also sure of a top-two place after beating Panathinaikos 3-2, and will finish top if they beat Maccabi and Rennes in their final two games.

Maccabi will claim a Europa Conference League play-off spot if they beat Villarreal and Panathinaikos in their last two matches.

Group G

Roma were held to a 1-1 draw away to Servette, meaning they must beat Sheriff – who conceded a 95th-minute winner against Slavia Prague – at home on matchday six to stand a chance of finishing top.

A Slavia Prague win at home to Servette on the final day will secure top spot for the Czech side, while Servette are guaranteed to enter the Europa Conference League play-off.

Group H

Bayer Leverkusen have five wins from five and top spot locked up after a 2-0 win away to Hacken, who are pointless and will finish bottom.

Qarabag scored a 95th-minute equaliser away to Molde, meaning they only have to match the Norwegian side’s result on matchday six to tie up second spot.

Europa Conference League

Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Legia Warsaw secured a top-two spot in Group E and means they will finish first if they avoid defeat to Zrinjski on matchday six.

Legia will enter the play-off if they win or draw against AZ Alkmaar – who beat Zrinjski 1-0 – in their final match.

Aberdeen came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 away to HJK Helsinki but both sides have already been eliminated.

PAOK won 2-1 away to Eintracht Frankfurt to lock up first place, while the German side are guaranteed to enter the play-offs.
