Daly Cherry-Evans’ opens up on representative future

Daly Cherry-Evans has given the strongest indication yet he will continue in a Maroons jersey next year following speculation he may have played his final representative game.

Cherry-Evans has played 22 Origins, including a Queensland-record 16 consecutive at No.7.

The Maroons skipper was sensational in the 2023 season, but indicated retirement had been crossed his mind, and admitted he “didn’t want to hang on too long”.

But speaking on Nine’s Sports Sunday, Cherry-Evans said he will hang onto rep footy “as long as possible”.

“They’ve given me some of my proudest on-field moments, so to give them away (now) I think I’d be doing it a bit prematurely,” he said.

“It’s actually really nice to break up the year. Our club season goes for so long now and having Origin in the middle and potentially some Australian footy at the end of the year, it really does break up the footy.

“It keeps me fresh and it gives me other ideas.

“You’re playing and hanging around the best players in the game, so if I want to continue playing at a high level, any time I can hang around the best coaches and best players I’m going to do it.”
