Carlton tipped to make grand final vs Geelong by 1995 premiership hero Ang Christou

Former Carlton star Ang Christou says Saturday night’s blockbuster clash between Carlton and Geelong shapes as a grand final preview.

Christou, who played in the Blues’ last premiership win in 1995, told 3AW’s Footy: Then and Now podcast he is tipping the same two clubs to face off in this year’s decider in what looks a wide-open race for the flag.

“It’s probably far-fetched, but I’m tipping Carlton and Geelong,” Christou said.

“There might be redemption, Geelong may win it, who knows, because of 1995 back in the day.”

The Blues haven’t played finals since 2013, but currently sit in fifth on the ladder, just one win behind leaders Geelong, having won 11 of 16 matches in Michael Voss’ first year as coach.

Christou said Adam Saad was the current Carlton player who reminded him the most of himself.

But that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given Saad grew up living next door to Christou.

“As a 13-year-old, 14-year-old, he always used to knock on my door every once in a while,” Christou said.

Christou recently helped Carlton pitch the handing over of the iconic “woof” chant from the crowd to Saad, who kicks long on his left foot while running out of the backline in eerily similar fashion to Christou back in the day.

“It’s amazing how powerful social media is,” he said.

“I don’t have social media, but within a day – I did that (video) on the Thursday – and then come Friday I could hear woofs … I thought, you’re joking.

“I think I might need that (social media) for my restaurant in Northcote.”
