Riding the high of last night’s 18-12 victory over the Dolphins in the inaugural Brisbane derby, the Broncos unleashed a savage sledge on its new crosstown rivals.
Ahead of the Dolphins entering the league this season, there were concerns the expansion side would take charge of Suncorp Stadium.
Laid out in this year’s draw, the Broncos and Dolphins will share Suncorp Stadium for parts of the season, with the Dolphins using the venue for seven home matches.
The Dolphins will also host three games at its traditional home, Dolphin Oval, in Redcliffe and take games on the road to the Sunshine Coast and Perth.
Despite the willingness of the Dolphins to claim Brisbane’s showpiece venue as its own, the Broncos were not going to let the city go easily and delivered when it mattered most.
After the match, in a hilarious post published on Twitter, the Brisbane Broncos to hurry home to Redcliffe – its base about 35km out of the city.
“Thank you for visiting the home of the Broncos. Safe travels back to Phinland,” the post read.
Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs also rammed home the message after he grounded a long-range try to seal the victory.
“Our f—ing home!” he said as he passionately pointed to the Suncorp Stadium turf.
Teammate Reece Walsh later said it was significant to get the win over the upstarts in their first match-up.
“You could see Tones at the end, pointing at the ground, the soil, I think it’s a statement to say, ‘This stadium’s ours’ and we’re not going to give it up easy,” he said.
