U.S. Open Winner Carlos Alcaraz to Miss Australian Open With Injury

Carlos Alcaraz, the 19-year-old tennis phenom who won the U.S. Open last September with some electrifying and long matches, will miss this month’s Australian Open, the opening Grand Slam tournament of the 2023 season.

Alcaraz posted on Friday that he had been injured in training. “This time it’s the semimembranosus muscle in my right leg,” he wrote.

“I’d worked so hard to get to my best level for Australia but unfortunately I won’t be able to play the Care A2+ Kooyong or the Australian Open,” he wrote. “It’s tough, but I have to be optimistic, recover and look forward.”

Alcaraz, of Spain, beat Casper Ruud of Norway in four sets to win the U.S. Open final, his first Grand Slam championship. He finished the season as the world’s top-ranked men’s player.
