New South Wales selectors are looking for a new left centre, following news Jack Wighton will miss game two due to COVID-19.
Wighton was a surprise selection in the three-quarters for the State of Origin opener, given specialist centre Stephen Crichton was named on the bench.
Crichton looms as the obvious Wighton replacement, but Blues great Andrew Johns is tipping a left-field selection for next Sunday’s game.
“There’s two options – Stephen Crichton, who was on the bench, could come in, or Kotoni Staggs,” Johns told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
“But Matt Burton, who is playing five-eighth (for the Bulldogs), could come in on the left side there.
“If they put Burton in he played with Penrith for a couple years, won a premiership there, so you’ve got the combination on that left side.
“But also he’s got that great kick, which takes the pressure off Cleary. I think they might go with Burton.”
