The trailer begins with the older Mackenzie walking up to the back of their Palm Springs rental home, littered with beer cans, as she finds her best friend Carla (Taylour Paige), who naturally doesn’t recognize her.

‘You can’t be here,’ Carla says but Mack keeps insisting she’s her, though Carla doesn’t believe her, saying, ‘One more move, you get an eye full of pepper.’

‘It’s me! Mack!’ she says, as Carla somehow starts to believe her.

‘I grew up always feeling like I was an older woman trapped in the body of a little girl,’ Mack says, as we see glimpses of her life and her being out of place.

She adds that she wrote a book, but another friend tells her, ‘If you’re not getting paid, it’s a hobby, and hobbies are disgusting.’

Mack adds at a reading of her book, ‘And I did my darndest to keep my inner old gal to myself.

During her trip to Palm Springs, Mack tells her friends Carla, Sunita (Aimee Carrero) and Michelle (Sara Amini) that she thought it would be, ‘super fun if we all lied down and did a past life regression!’

The girls aren’t exactly into it and Carla says she should do it and they’ll just meet her back at the house.

She goes into the regression tent where she’s met by Luca (Simon Rex), who tells her to, ‘lay down and think about who you want to be.’

‘I’m a 70-year-old woman trapped in the body of a 30-year-old who just needs a minute to rest!’ Mack screams… before she’s transformed to her 70-year-old self.

‘Somebody help me this is not me!’ she screams outside of an empty tent, with everyone gone, before making it back to Carla.

‘So you were thinking about old lady stuff and you turned into one?’ Carla says, adding, ‘So he should be able to turn you back into you.’

Alas, when she goes back to where the regression tent was, nothing remains, as she returns to Los Angeles, where she meets her dog sitter (Dustin Milligan), introducing herself as Mack’s ‘Aunt Rita.’

Carla introduces ‘Aunt Rita’ to some of her older friends (Lois Smith, Amy Hill, Wendie Malick), who says their wine club meets every day.

Rita starts taking over for Mack’s job as writer and influencer, as she forms a bond with the dog sitter Jack as well.

Carla insists, ‘everything that’s happening for you right now is because you’re showing the world who you are,’ as her boss says they’re getting, ‘some interesting offers for Rita.’

‘Post more of my glammy grammy, people are dying for her,’ the boss insists, as another friend (Nicole Byer) says Mack didn’t want to be old, ‘what you wanted was to be you.’

The trailer ends with Mack/Rita finally tracking down Luca, screaming, ‘I laid down in that pod and when I came out I was in this body!’

‘OK you’re coming in with a lot of energy,’ Luca says as Rita screams at him as the trailer comes to an end.

Mack and Rita, from director Katie Aselton (Black Rock), debuts in theaters August 12 from Gravitas Ventures.
