Heathrow airport has appointed the boss of Copenhagen airport as its new chief executive, handing Thomas Woldbye the task of rebuilding relations with airlines and restarting its controversial expansion plan.

Woldbye will replace current chief executive John Holland-Kaye later in the year, Heathrow said in a statement on Friday.

Holland-Kaye announced his departure in February, ending an almost 10-year term that left him steering the airport through the financial damage caused by the pandemic.

Relations with airlines hit new lows as Heathrow pushed to raise its landing charges in the aftermath of the crisis, while the airport is still publicly committed to building a third runway at its west London site.
