Bernie Sanders says Biden and McCarthy can ‘start negotiating tomorrow’ on the debt ceiling

Sen. Bernie Sanders said Democrats could get behind spending cuts for the military and President Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy could start negotiating immediately if Republicans would take default off the table.

‘Is it time for President Biden to start negotiating?’ the Vermont senator was asked by CNN‘s Dana Bash on Sunday.

‘I think we can start negotiating tomorrow,’ he said.

‘But you cannot be holding the world’s economy hostage. What the Republicans have got to say is absolutely we are calling to make sure that we pay our debt. Let’s sit down and negotiate a budget.’

Last week Republicans passed a sprawling debt limit bill that they said would save $4.5 trillion in exchange for lifting the nation’s borrowing cap by $1.5 trillion. Now GOP leadership insists the ball is in Biden’s court to come to the negotiating table.

Asked what sort of budget cuts Democrats could negotiate on with Republicans, Sanders said: ‘I think we can move towards cutting military spending without spending 10 times more than the people of any other country on Earth. Massive cost overruns in the Pentagon.’

He also called for tax increases on the wealthy, adding he was ‘willing’ to look at budget cuts related to government.

‘The largest corporations in this country, the wealthiest people [need to] have their fair share of taxes.’

On Saturday on CNN Sanders had said he did not think billionaires should exist.

‘We should go back to a very progressive tax policy,’ he said. ‘I think people can make it on $999 million.’

And after running against Biden in a primary in 2020, Sanders said he thought Biden could ‘win in a landslide’ in 2024.

The senator it’s ‘no great secret’ he and Biden ‘have strong differences of opinion’ but stressed Biden was the right person to take on Republicans.

‘We live in a nation where you have a major political party, the Republican Party, where many- not all, but many of their leadership doesn’t even believe in democracy, they maintain the myth that Trump won the last election. They’re trying to keep people from voting. They’re trying to deny women the right to control their own bodies,’ Sanders said.

‘If you believe in democracy, you want to see more people vote, not fewer people vote, I think the choice is pretty clear. And that choice is Biden,’ he said.

Sanders also shrugged off concerns about Biden’s age.

‘Well, I think when you look at a candidate you consider a lot. I think age is one thing, I think experience is another thing, I think your record that you have established is another thing,’ Sanders said.
