One person killed, two injured in shooting outside art gallery in Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan

One man was killed and two other people were injured in a shooting outside an art gallery in the high-end Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan as crime in the Big Apple continues to surge.

Shots rang out around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday at West 25th Street near 10th Avenue, police said. They arrived on the scene to find three people with gunshot wounds.

A 42-year-old man died after being shot multiple times, police said. The victim’s name has not been released.

A 37-year-old man was shot in both legs and rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital while a 32-year-old woman was shot in the leg and taken to Bellevue Hospital. They are both reported to be in stable condition.

The details of what led to the shooting are unclear at the time. No arrests have been made.

The latest violence in the Big Apple comes less than a week after Gov. Kathy Hochul – who inherited the position after the resignation of Andrew Cuomo – won her first full term in office, despite the crime surge which is being blamed largely on Democrats.

The shooting happened outside 541 West 25th Street between 10th and 11th avenues – the address of an art gallery that is described on its website as an ‘iconic, exceptional and unique event venue, located in the heart of Chelsea.’

The ‘luxurious event space’ is used for private, social events, weddings, product launches, corporate events, art exhibits, Bar Mitzvahs, Bat Mitzvahs, fundraisers, charities, private concerts, fashion shows, international conferences, corporate meetings, birthdays, Quinceaneras & Sweet 16, awards ceremonies and press events.

It’s not clear if there were any events happening at the time of the shooting or if anyone was at the venue during that time.

No arrests have been made in the shooting and police are investigating as crime continues to city across the city.

As of late October, subway crime is up a whopping 41 percent in New York City, according to CNN.

Felony assaults are also up nearly 14 percent, with police recording 22,319 cases so far this year, and rapes have increased by nearly 11 percent.

The city’s transit system appears to be bearing the brunt of surging crime, with about 1,865 reports so far in 2022, a 41.7 percent spike from last year.

Earlier this week, Gov. Hochul defeated Republican congressman Lee Zeldin, an ally of Donald Trump, despite his campaign focus on the fear of violent crime.

Hochul had been expected to win in a state where there are more than twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans.

But Zeldin made the race competitive, closing in on Hochul in the final weeks and appearing to spur her to speak more about public safety.

In the midterms this year, voters have voiced frustrations like stubborn inflation and a shaky economy, but in New York, concerns about crime took precedence.
