Julia and JP’s relationship was born from their collaboration on the 2019 ballad If The World Was Ending. Although they cowrote the track, it was credited to Saxe, with Michaels listed as the featured artist.

The song reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and ultimately sold more than three million units in the US.

The song’s success continued with the singers earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year, which is specifically awarded to songwriters, rather than the performing artists, though Michaels and Saxe did double duty on the track.

The singer–songwriters launched their relationship shortly after collaborating on the song, and they were driven closer to each other while quarantining together at the start of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Breakup rumors had been swirling around the couple since earlier this month, when they shared dueling social media posts that appeared to reveal breakup songs in the works.

Starting on September 9, Saxe posted a video of himself singing and playing acoustic guitar on a park bench, with the lyrics written on screen.

‘When you think of me / Are you setting fire to every memory? / Do you believe what doesn’t last forever don’t mean anything?’ he sang, which led some fans to speculate that his relationship with Michaels had gone south.

‘Cause I swear I loved you fully / And I’m sorry not for staying who we thought I’d be,’ he continued. ‘When you think of me, am I just another man who leaves?’

Michaels initially seemed to reply via since-deleted lyrics that were apparently captured in a fans TikTok video that also explained rumors of a breakup.

‘You’re just another man / And this is just another doorway / Using promises like they’re some kind of twisted fore play,’ read Michaels’ alleged lyrics. ‘You keep saying that you’re staying / When we both know that’s not your forte.’

‘Cut to: you give me one last kiss / And leave your keys there in the foyer / And say you’re sorry / You never meant to hurt me like you do / Well I’m sorry to me too,’ the song continued. ‘For all the love I wasted on you / Baby I’m sorry to me / Sorry to me too.’

Saxe returned to Instagram after her post and shared another set of lyrics on his main Instagram page.

‘I hate myself for hurting you / but it would make it worse to fix it / I wish I’d figured out a way / of keeping myself in it,’ he wrote.

‘I hate how I lived up to / your worst fears / makes it worse / how it worked / so well for three years / and it could all be for the best in the end / but for now it feels like losing my best friend.’

Michaels seemed to escalate the dueling breakup songs with another performance posted to her Instagram that featured her at the piano, which she captioned ‘A******s live forever.’

She sang and played her piano while running through the lyrics she had previously published.

On Wednesday, Saxe shared a clip of himself walking past a burning sofa, which promoted the September 23 release of the song and video for his single When You Think Of Me.

Michaels had another statement to make, and she returned to TikTok on Wednesday with her own video, which showed her looking somber in a hoodie while an unreleased breakup song that she had recorded played on the soundtrack.
