Australian John Millman has been eliminated in the opening round of the US Open to American Emilio Nava, 7-6 4-6 7-6 1-6 6-1.
In a gutsy five-set clash, Millman had his chances but couldn’t convert to give Nava, 20, a chance to advance to the third round, when he plays former champion Andy Murray next up.
Fellow Australian Alex de Minaur is currently engaged in a tense first set battle against Filip Krajinovic, down 4-3 and a break.
If the schedule goes to plan, Aussie Daria Saville plays Elena-Gabriela Ruse at 6:20am AEST.
Jordan Thompson vs Lorenzo Sonego is scheduled to start at 6.55am AEST.
While, Ajla Tomljanovic takes on Karolina Muchova at 7.10am AEST.
Elsewhere, Novak Djokovic might not be in attendance at Flushing Meadows but he’s hasn’t been forgotten.
A small group of demonstrators chanting “Novak! Novak!” outside the entrance of the U.S. Open urged an end of the vaccine travel mandate that kept him from competing in this year’s tournament.
The Serbian star was not able to travel to the U.S. because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19. He was able to compete during the previous two U.S. Opens held during the pandemic, but the current vaccine requirement began last Nov. 8.
Members of Families are Essential and Children’s Health Defense & Teachers for Choice were among the demonstrators, standing behind signs that read “End The Travel Mandate Now!”
