Adele Roberts reveals she suffered a prolapsed stoma that left her ‘colon hanging out’

Adele Roberts has revealed she suffered a prolapsed stoma which she told had left her ‘colon hanging out.’

Taking to her Instagram on Friday, the former Big Brother star, 43, told how the ‘scary’ issue had occurred while she was getting ready for Scott Mills’ leaving party, with her partner Kate Holderness having to help fix it at home.

Adele, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in October 2021 and was declared cancer-free in June, admitted that she ‘didn’t know this could happen’ and was initially ‘freaking out’, before coming to the realisation that it looked worse than it was.

The BBC Radio 1 DJ kept her fans updated with her and Kate’s attempts to fix the stoma, which she nicknamed Audrey, with the pair even putting sugar on it to make it go down.

A prolapsed stoma is where the stoma comes out too far above the level of the skin. It can often be fixed with a different type of stoma bag but in more complex cases, surgery is needed.

The star initially took to her Instagram stories to share what had happened, saying: ‘Another day another Audrey bit of mischief. My stoma’s prolapsed today.’

She then used an umbrella handle to show how much the size of the stoma had changed, adding: ‘I’ve got to go and have a shower now, get this elephant trunk out, put ice on it. That’s one thing that makes it go down, or apparently sprinkle it with sugar.’

Adele also took to her grid to share an image of her stomach covered in sugar to demonstrate her and Kate’s attempts to get her stoma back in.

She also shared a video giving her followers an update on the situation, stating how they ‘managed to get my stoma back inside my body, with sugar – it actually works!’

She went on to say that it was the ‘most grotesque thing I’ve ever seen’ and noted that they initially filmed it to show people, but decided against sharing the footage so as to not alarm people – especially those with stomas.

The clip also saw Kate displaying the normal size of Adele’s stoma before using her hands to demonstrate just how far it was puked outside her body, with Adele quipping: ‘I can’t believe I didn’t die!’

The star also shared a length caption alongside her post in which she spoke further about the ‘quite shocking’ moment and thanked fans for sharing their advice.

She penned: ‘If you’d have told me a year ago I’d be sugaring my colon I wouldn’t have believed you! Audrey’s at it again – why have I got the naughtiest stoma alive?!

‘I would show you what a prolapsed stoma looks like… but I’ve just watched the footage back and I wouldn’t want to alarm anyone. It is actually quite shocking to be fair… but I think it’s also important to share – I didn’t know this could happen.

‘I was freaking out and very scared but thanks to others sharing their stories online, I’ve realised it’s quite common and looks worse than it is.’

She concluded: ‘Thanks so much to everyone sending advice today and please call your #stoma nurse immediately or seek medical advice if the same happens to you.

How am I going to tell Scott Mills I couldn’t go to his leaving party because my colon was hanging out.’

Kate also took to her own Instagram to share an image of her preparing to cover Adele’s stoma in sugar after learning online that it could potentially fix the issue.

She wrote: ‘STOMA SUGAR. Just in case we can’t make your leaving party @realscottmills & @chrisstark.

‘Current situation is trying to pop @adeleroberts’ small intestine back inside her body (her stoma has prolapsed & apparently sugar helps?!)…enjoying your show whilst we perform this backstreet operation #Loveyoubye.’
