Ding Junhui penalised for wearing wrong coloured pants, English Open

Chinese snooker player Ding Junhui was denied the opening frame of his 4-3 win over fellow countryman Ma Hailong at the English Open after arriving in the wrong coloured pants.

Sporting a seemingly inconspicuous pair of brown pants, Ding forgot that the dress code at the tournament stipulates all black clothing.

In realising his mistake, Ding sent a friend to purchase a new pair of pants from a nearby shop but had to forfeit the opening frame after his wardrobe change caused the match to be delayed.

“I totally forgot I needed a black shirt and trousers,” Ding said.

“My memory is not good. I didn’t think about it. Once I was playing, I tried to just concentrate on the match.

“Luckily Ma’s safety was not that good and he gave me enough chances to win.”

Ding trailed 3-1 in the encounter before rallying from behind to take the final three frames to progress to the event’s second round.

A 14-time ranking event winner, Ding has previously conquered the Masters and the UK Championship.
