Live news: Mitch McConnell insists he will complete Senate term

Mitch McConnell insisted on Wednesday that he would stay in his leadership role as the Senate’s top Republican.

“I have no announcements to make on that subject. I am going to finish my term as leader and I am going to finish my Senate term,” the 81-year-old said in his first major press conference since freezing in front of reporters last week.

After the incident, McConnell was pronounced “medically clear” to continue working. His term ends in 2026.

Rand Paul, the junior senator from Kentucky and a medical doctor, told reporters on Tuesday that McConnell’s freeze looked like a “focal neurologic event”.

Josh Hawley, the Republican senator from Missouri, said he was “concerned” about McConnell’s age.
