Despite announcing he will hang up the boots when the Brisbane Lions’ finals campaign comes to an end, veteran Daniel Rich hasn’t ruled out a return to contribute in the push for a premiership.
Rich, who confirmed his retirement to teammates on Monday, has played just seven games in 2023, a far cry from his 22 last season.
But the limited role in the club’s best side hasn’t deterred the 33-year-old’s hunger to earn his spot back, as the Lions prepare to host Port Adelaide in the qualifying final on Saturday night.

“The focus is the next month and to be there in any way to support or get out there with the boys,” Rich said on 3AW on Tuesday.
The same message was reiterated to Lions players and staff at his retirement press conference on Monday.
“It’s been a frustrating year that’s for sure, but it is what it is and all I can do is be the best teammate and person I can be to make the group and club better in any way possible,” Rich said on Monday.
“There’s still plenty of time to go in this season, so I will work hard and be ready if needed, but if not, I will do my bit to support the boys and to be part of the story whether I am out there or not because this club means so much to me.”
Rich, who has played 275 games for the Lions, thanked his teammates, coaches and staff for their support, expressing his gratitude that he has contributed to Brisbane’s bounce back.
“I am proud to call myself a one club player and I am proud that I have been a small part in turning things around over the recent years at the Lions,” Rich said on Monday.
As for his immediate next steps, the Lions VFL side face Williamstown in the first semi-final on Saturday, with Rich hoping he can contribute to their success as well.
“I’ll be able to put my hand up to play some VFL this weekend, I’ve really enjoyed spending time with those guys,” Rich said on 3AW on Tuesday.
The Lions face Port Adelaide at the Gabba on Saturday night, with the winner advancing to a home preliminary final.
