US Open Tennis LIVE 2023 results, scores day eight; Alex De Minaur anticipating ‘chess battle’ against Daniil Medvedev; Marketa Vondrousova injured in doubles

Australian star Alex de Minaur has the chance to match his best grand slam finish, as his round of 16 game begins against Daniil Medvedev.

De Minaur, ranked 13th in the world, previously reached the quarter finals of the US Open in 2020 and could return to that finals arena if he pulls off an upset against the world No.3.

Ahead of his important match, de Minaur gave an insight into the tactics of Medvedev.

“He’s an extreme kind of counter puncher, a defensive specialist who finds ways to bait opponents into playing the game style he wants,” he said.

“He’s an extremely good tactician and you know whenever you play him you have got to be ready for an absolute chess battle.”

De Minaur’s record against the Russian has seen him win only two of his six matches. However, those two have been the most recent games.

Despite the six games, both men haven’t faced off in a grand slam.

“I haven’t played him in a major yet,” de Minaur said. “So this is going to be a new experience for both of us.”

“I’m sure there’s going to be chances both ways. It’s about who just sticks around and fights to the end and finds a way.

“I am expecting an absolute battle.”
