Pixel 8 Pro to retain physical SIM card slot and may get Night Sight feature for videos

Google recently announced the launch date for its next-generation flagship smartphones. Google has confirmed that it will launch its new Pixel 8 series on October 4. The upcoming Pixel 8 series is said to consist of two smartphones — Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Now a new report has surfaced online revealing some details about the upcoming Pixel 8 smartphone.

Google Pixel 8 to retain the physical SIM card slot
A recent online leak revealed that with Google Pixel 8, the tech giant will remove the physical SIM card slot and the buyers will have to switch to e-SIM. However, a new report reveals that this is not the case. According to 9to5Google, the Google Pixel 8 will retain its physical SIM card tray. So, Google is not yet following Apple and it will not ditch the physical SIM card slot.

Along with this, the report also adds that the Google Pixel 8 Pro will come with Night Sight video support. The report suggests that the Pixel 8 Pro will feature Night Sight video for better recording in low-light situations. This feature has the potential to enhance the quality of videos recorded in low-light conditions, with additional improvements achievable through the faster image signal processor (ISP) and the AI capabilities of the Tensor G3 SoC.

Google Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro: What to expect

The upcoming models are expected to maintain their existing design lineage, albeit with some subtle differences. Notably, the Pro model for this year is rumoured to feature a flat display, departing from the curved display of previous iterations, aligning it more closely with the vanilla model. Additionally, the Pro model’s camera visor is expected to integrate a single cutout for all its lenses and include a temperature sensor.

Under the hood, the Pixel 8 series is anticipated to be powered by the third generation of Google’s in-house chipset, the Tensor G3, and both smartphones are likely to come with Android 14 pre-installed.

In terms of camera enhancements, rumours suggest that the Pixel 8 series will feature a new 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN2 primary sensor, capable of capturing 35% more light than the GN1 sensors found in the Pixel 6 and 7 series. The Pixel 8 Pro may further incorporate a new 64MP ultra-wide sensor, while the Pixel 8 is expected to retain a 12.2MP version. Both models will introduce new software features, including the ability to control bokeh intensity and an adaptive torch to prevent overexposure.

Regarding the display, the Pixel 8 is said to sport a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. On the other hand, the Pixel 8 Pro is anticipated to feature a 6.7-inch flat display with a variable 120Hz refresh rate and an impressive peak brightness of 1600 nits.

Battery capacities in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will see slight upgrades, with the former packing a 4,485mAh battery and the latter housing a 4950mAh battery. Additionally, both models will support faster wired charging speeds, with the Pixel 8 accommodating 24W charging and the Pixel 8 Pro supporting 27W charging speed. Both models will also provide 20W wireless charging support, although Qi 2 charging speed will be capped at 12W.
