Garena relaunches Free Fire in India, over a year after it was banned on ‘national security grounds’

Singapore-based online games developer and publisher, Garena has announced the relaunch of Free Fire India. The relaunch comes almost one and a half year after the game was banned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, citing the Section 69a of the IT ACT, 2000. The game was banned along with 50 other China-linked apps.

The battle royale game had over 40 million of its 75 million globally monthly active users in India in January, according to analytics firm App Annie. In fact, ‘Garena’s Free Fire: Illuminate’ was the most popular app to be banned in India in February 2022.

In its new avatar, the game will be available for download in the country starting September 5.

Free Fire India features
Garena is touting several localised features that the relaunched version of ‘Free Fire’ offers. It is said to offer features and content specifically developed for Indian users. There are also features that promote safe, healthy and fun gameplay. These include a verification system to enable parental supervision, gameplay limitations and ‘take a break’ reminders.
