Detail in campsite photo shows growing Australian trend that’s changing our road trips forever

A single photo of an Australian campsite has revealed a new gadget taking the outdoor scene by storm.

A man in Airlie Beach, Queensland, posted a photo of five 4WDs and four of Elon Musk‘s SpaceX-powered, satellite-based Starlink internet networks.

‘New game: Spot the Starlink,’ he captioned the photo of the white satellite dishes.

Australians were quick to share their thoughts on the popular device.

‘And it’s only going to increase. Loving my Starlink!’ one man commented.

‘It’s the latest flex in caravan parks,’ a second wrote.

A third disagreed, writing: ‘Personally I couldn’t think of anything worse than going on holiday and taking the internet with me lol’.

The Starlink boasts download speeds of up to 240Mb/s-plus – almost 10 times the advertised sustained speed of NBN’s Sky Muster service – with users connecting to the internet via a matrix of small satellites.

The Simpson Desert – at the very red centre of Australia – is one of the harshest, most remote spots on earth. You can die here and no one may ever know.

But inside Ty Fenwick’s Ford F250 ute, his family is happily online, taking Zoom calls and watching Disney+ as they thunder through the arid, barren landscape.

There are 4,000 Starlink satellites which have been launched into a low orbit over Earth since 2019, with a plan to increase that to 12,000 and then 42,000.

Starlink supplies internet to 1.5million subscribers in 60 countries – including 120,000 customers in Australia.

The device offers speeds almost 10 times that of the NBN network.

Many keen adventurers have posted glowing reviews of their Starlink on Facebook groups created specifically for Australian users to share their tips and tricks.

One family, who run the Instagram page ‘Our Whittle Adventure’ said after just one month of using Starlink ‘everything had changed’ for them.

‘We definitely hesitated in purchasing Starlink, it is a lot of money when we have managed so well for over 2 years without it, but with the 50% off hardware and 2 months free we decided to bite the bullet,’ the couple said.

‘Now, after one month of using it, it has changed everything for us! We are now confident to be anywhere for those working days, the WiFi calling works a treat with no noticeable delay, the download speeds are ridiculous, (280mb at the moment).’

‘Its also added another sense of security for us being able to contact family and friends wherever we are.

‘The only real downside we have for it, is that it needs 240vAC so we need to run our inverter to power it.’
