Apple makes this exception for X on App Store

Twitter was renamed to X and over the past few days, the rebranding started to reflect on the web, Android and iPhones. However, despite changing the logo to X, the name of the app remained “Twitter” on the App Store. But this has now changed.

Previously, it was reported that Apple makes it mandatory for apps to have at least two letters in their names. This rule prohibited the ‘X’ rebranding to reflect on the App Store. As per the latest development, the ‘Twitter’ name has been dropped in favour of ‘X’ and there’s a new tagline, “blaze your glory!”, which Musk posted this week.

This suggests that the app got a special treatment from Apple and allowed the social media company to go ahead with a single-character name.

Elon Musk’s ‘war’ with Apple
Last year, Musk in a series of posts, questioned Apple’s take on a number of things. It was the time when brands were pausing advertising on the platform. He said that “Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter,” before wondering if Apple actually hated “hate free speech in America?”.

The billionaire was then asked if Apple was “threatening Twitter’s presence in the App Store or otherwise making moderation demands?” Musk affirmed saying that he might not have a choice but to go to ‘war’ with the company.

A few days later, Musk met Apple CEO Tim Cook and posted a short video thanking Cook for “taking me around the beautiful Apple HQ”. Musk also said that he had a good conversation with Cook and that Apple never had plans of removing Twitter from the App Store.

“Good conversation. Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store. Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so,” Musk posted.

Notably, the company still has a lot of work to do to completely change the brand to X. There are still references to Twitter in multiple important areas, for example, Twitter Blue. The help page has “help.twitter.com” URL and the details mention ‘Twitter’ name often.
