Britain will be hit by MORE heavy showers as Met Office issues another thunderstorm warning

Britain is braced for even more wet weather today, with thunderstorms set to strike in north west England and the midlands later this afternoon.

Five flood warnings and 42 flood alerts are in place across England today and wet weather shows no sign of abating in parts of the country.

A Met Office yellow warning for thunderstorms is in place for Northern Ireland, with rain also expected in Wales and parts of England and Scotland.

Temperatures highs of 25C (77F) are expected across much of eastern Britain, quelling earlier predictions of a 33C (91.4F) heatwave.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: ‘It’s a bright start for many on Sunday morning, still that heavy rain across north east Scotland only slowly edging northwards and then also heavy rain possible across south east England.

‘For many, through the day – it’s a case of sunny spells and scattered showers. Some of the showers will be heavy particularly parts of Northern Ireland, Met office warning in force, with hail, some gusty winds and flooding possible.

‘Heavy showers also expected across Wales and the midlands, into south west England. If you are travelling, it’s worth taking extra care on the roads on Sunday afternoon.

‘Temperature-wise, it’s a little lower compared to Saturday but still feeling quite warm and humid with highs of 25 or 26. Towards the south and east, a little fresher towards the north west temperatures in the low 20s.

‘These showers continue to rumble on into Sunday evening, with some heavy bursts possible but they do ease by the end of the day and overnight it’s generally dry for most with clear spells.’

Tomorrow is set for a few isolated showers, mainly in coastal areas, though northeastern areas may see some lingering rainfall. Clear skies elsewhere and generally cooler and less muggy than recent nights.

Yesterday saw thunderstorms have soaked the country, with Wimbledon fans washed out of the tennis courts by downpour.

Cooler air came through overnight and into this morning, but temperatures are lower today with a maximum of 25 or 26C predicted, but it will be sunnier.

Showers will develop through Sunday afternoon, with south-west England, Wales and Northern Ireland potentially seeing rain.

Another yellow thunderstorm warning is in place for Northern Ireland on Sunday between 10am and 9pm, and there is the potential for heavy showers, the Met Office said.

Into next week it will be unsettled with rain on Monday and thunderstorms expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The temperature will reach the low-to-mid 20s in the early part of next week, the forecaster said.

Met forecaster Simon Partridge said: ‘It won’t be as warm, as humid, and it will be a bit more changeable which probably won’t be good news for people at Wimbledon.’

Tennis fans are still in good spirits despite a washout at Wimbledon as matches were  suspended across the courts for a short while.

Tennis fans were forced to take cover beneath umbrellas or huddle together in raincoats during today’s play. Few brave fans remained sat in their seats.

The wet weather has also damped spirits at the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

The game is finely poised with Australia leading by 142 runs in their second innings, four wickets down after an England flurry on Friday night.

The covers had come off in the morning but were out back on when the rain returned.

Also taking place this weekend is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, but today’s downpours could make Lewis Hamilton’s dreams of a record ninth win at his home track even more difficult.
