Alibaba takes on OpenAI with Tongyi Wanxiang, its new AI image generator

Alibaba has introduced an AI image generator, Tongyi Wanxiang, currently in beta form and only available to enterprise customers. This move is part of the company’s efforts to expand its offerings in the rapidly growing AI industry.

At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Friday, the Tongyi Wanxiang image generator was unveiled. Its name means “truth from tens of thousands of pictures.”

Tongyi Wanxiang image generator will be in competition with OpenAI’s DALL-E and MidJourney, both of which are popular rivals based in the United States and have a large following worldwide.

Alibaba Cloud, which underwent a major reorganisation resulting in six units, has also launched a ChatGPT-like AI text generator called Tongyi Qianwen in April.

Developers can now access ModelScopeGPT too, an AI tool, through Alibaba Cloud.

Baidu and SenseTime have recently introduced AI image generators in China. However, these generative AI services have not yet been approved for widespread distribution due to regulatory reasons.

Other Chinese companies are also actively launching AI products and services in response to the popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot.

China announces standardisation group for Artificial Intelligence
During the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC 2023), the Chinese National Standards Committee revealed the formation of a major standardisation group for Artificial Intelligence. This committee includes major Chinese tech companies such as Huawei, Baidu, and Alibaba. It is the first of its kind body and was officially certified at the event.

The Large Scale Model Committee aims to promote the integration of large-model technology and standardisation practices. This is done in order to support the healthy development of the artificial intelligence industry. The committee will formulate standards for large models as part of its efforts.

The companies part of the group have been working on theoretical research, industrial application, and international trends in AI. Further, they should also be familiar with relevant laws, regulations, and standards.
