Adelaide drink driver allegedly crashes into police while they were carrying out breath tests

An alleged drunk driver crashed into the back of a police car while officers were performing a breath test on another motorist in Adelaide.

Police were called to Waterloo Corner on the North-South Motorway at about 1 am on Thursday following reports a black Jeep driver had lost control and crashed into the median barrier.

When officers arrived, they parked their vehicle behind the crashed car before getting out to speak to the driver and perform a breath test.

However, while officers were at the Jeep, a second driver in a silver Mitsubishi Magna crashed into the back of the parked police car, which had its emergency lights on.

The driver of the Jeep, a 34-year-old Smithfield man, allegedly returned a 0.236 reading on his blood alcohol test – nearly five times over the legal limit.

The Mitsubishi driver, a 56-year-old Hove man, also allegedly tested positive with a reading of 0.183.

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05.

‘The first man was reported for drink driving, while the second man was reported for drink driving and driving without due care,’ South Australian Police said.

‘Both men lost their licences on the spot for 12 months, and their cars were towed from the scene and impounded for 28 days.

‘They will both be summonsed to court at a later date.’
