Several major tech companies are expected to foray into the Extended Reality (XR) market. Reports suggest that Apple is likely to launch its first-ever AR/VR headset, rumoured to be named Reality Pro, at the company’s annual developer conference, WWDC 2023 which is set to be held on June 5. Now, Samsung is also reportedly planning to develop chips for XR (Extended Reality) devices. According to a report by Korea Economic Daily, the tech giant is expected to unveil a new XR headset in late 2023 or the first half of 2024. The report claims that the company has a ‘concrete’ plan to is expected to unveil a new XR headset sometime later this year or the first half of next year.
Samsung may compete with Google, Qualcomm
As per the report, Samsung’s System LSI division which also develops Exynos processors and ISOCELL camera sensors has started taking its initial step toward making chipsets for XR devices. With these chipsets, the company may also have plans to compete with the likes of Google and Qualcomm.
How Samsung will make XR chips
The report claims that the company may either design completely new chips or may modify existing ones to suit XR devices. These chipsets will be responsible for running the operating system, apps, calculating sensor data and tracking user motions.
Rise of XR devices
XR devices help in overlaying data over reality to create experiences like — live translation, immersive meetings and navigation. A Counterpoint report has predicted that over 110 million XR devices could be sold yearly by 2025. Currently, only 18 million units are being sold per year.
