Maria Thattil furious after stranger says she and female date are ‘too pretty’ to be lesbians

A bisexual beauty queen has recalled the mortifying moment a ‘drunk’ stranger interrupted her date to say she was ‘too pretty’ to be seeing another woman.

Maria Thattil, a former Miss Universe Australia, said she felt ‘interrogated’ after the ‘middle-aged’ patron approached her when she was kissing her lover at a bar.

Ms Thattil wrote in her column for 9Honey: ‘The stranger said, “The thing is, you’re stunning,” gesturing to my date before pointing to me, “But you are also so pretty?”

‘She followed with an explanation that she wasn’t used to seeing ‘two beautiful women together.’

Ms Thattil, 29, who came out as bisexual on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in January, said the stranger then explained to her how lesbian relationships usually consist of ‘one “beautiful, feminine” partner and a “less attractive, butch” partner’.

To her horror, the woman assumed her date was ‘the guy’ in their relationship because she was wearing a ‘snapback cap’ and baggy T-shirt.

‘The odd encounter lasted anywhere between 10 to 20 minutes before the stranger rounded off the main course with dessert: asking to take a photo of us,’ the model complained.

Describing the conversation as an ‘offensive and rude interrogation’, Ms Thattil insisted that lesbian couples shouldn’t be ‘ogled like zoo animals’ when they don’t fit into a ‘masculine and feminine’ stereotype.

Maria came clean about her sexuality in the I’m a Celebrity jungle earlier this year.

She later said she’d kept her sexuality hidden for years because there were ‘many homophobic sentiments in [her] school around being a lesbian’.

‘It is something I have felt for a very long time,’ she told The Daily Telegraph.

‘I grew up having crushes on girls in school and just completely invalidated it because of religion and also because there were many homophobic sentiments in my school around being a lesbian, around anything other than heteronormativity.

‘You don’t have a lot of bisexual visibility in popular culture and so you don’t understand what it is.’
