Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes reveals secret battle with mental illness at height of his fame

Darren Hayes has opened up about his secret battle with mental illness.

The Savage Garden singer, 50, said in his column for Huff Post, he was ‘masking rapidly increasing depression‘ at the height of his fame.

‘I was beginning to experience the full force of a mental illness that had seeded itself when I was a child… Nobody could have known any of this as they watched me,’ he wrote.

He continued: ‘Savage Garden was on the precipice of global fame and would go on to sell 26 million albums, have two Billboard No. 1 singles and tour the world.’

‘Yet no one knew I was deeply unhappy, barely containing secrets that would soon devastate me emotionally and send me to the brink of suicide at the height of my fame.’

It comes after Darren previously told the Herald Sun he felt ‘deeply saddened’ about not being able to express his true self.

‘I had a huge sense of grief about my relationship to my sexuality, and grief about my career at the peak of my Savage Garden fame,’ he said.

‘The audience never truly knew who I was. And that made me so deeply sad,’ he added.

Darren came out in 2006 when he married his partner Richard Cullen in the UK.

Savage Garden, comprising Darren and guitarist Daniel Jones, formed in 1993 and produced a slew of No. 1 hits like To the Moon and Back and Truly Madly Deeply.

The band called it quits in 2001. Darren continued with a solo career while Daniel went on to marry former Hi-5 star Kathleen De Leon.

It is unlikely Savage Garden will ever reunite because the duo ‘don’t have a friendship anymore’.

Truly Madly Deeply was one of Savage Garden’s biggest hits.

The song won the 1997 ARIA Award for highest-selling single and single of the year. It also reached the number one spot in Australia, the U.S. and Canada.

It was added to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s list of recordings in 2019 in recognition of its cultural significance.
