Oscars 2023: The full list of winners

A year after one of the most infamous Oscar awards to date, a champagne-coloured carpet welcomed back stars to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday — and the star power didn’t disappoint as Everything Everywhere All at Once drove the hardware haul.

After Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue alluding to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock onstage in 2022 created a buzz, two veterans who appeared in the sci-fi adventure Everything Everywhere gave award-acceptance speeches that brought cheers and tears.

Ke Huy Quan was named best supporting actor and Jamie Lee Curtis took the supporting actress Oscar. In total, Everything Everywhere won seven awards, including best picture and best actress for Michelle Yeoh.

But Canadians also made their mark.

Brendan Fraser, the son of Canadian parents who was born in the U.S., won his first Oscar, for best actor in The Whale. Fraser portrays a writer and lecturer who lives a reclusive life at home after he spirals into morbid obesity.

Toronto filmmaker Daniel Roher won best documentary for his work in NavalnyIt revolves around the 2020 assassination attempt on Alexei Navalny and events leading to the now-imprisoned Russian opposition leader’s poisoning. Later, director James Cameron’s sequel Avatar: The Way of Water won the Oscar for special effects.
